No Sleep

Retiring, for me, it's a daily retreat because closing my eyes means admitting defeat.
A nightly surrender between stark white sheets.
A grueling, forced march drilled upon freezing feet.
I can't confirm monsters under my bed but I won't be told that it's all in my head.
One of us might wake up, the other might be dead.
I think it's safer to stay awake instead.
God forbid I admit for a moment that I might be alone.
Don't be afraid when we turn out the lights, this world won't end when we both say goodnight.
The darkness just borrows your soul for the night: a subsidized treasure where dreams will take flight.
Don't forget that the sun's going to rise and we'll both be here come the dawn.
I'll miss my moment. Another chance will pass as yet another day has gone.

Why Shouldn't I

Why shouldn't I speak ill of the dead?
Not a reflection on the life they lead and I can't change my memory.
Why shouldn't I be straight with my friends?
Not restrain my tongue and pretend that I can't see what they won't say.
I can't be good at everything.
I won't pretend that away.
Why shouldn't I just be what I am?
Why am I this way?
Why shouldn't I embrace the strange?
Quirks that make us interesting shouldn't be stopped or hidden away.
